Washburn Rural High School is located in southwest Topeka, Kansas. The school is home to approximately 1600 students each year. Edward Raines became the principal in 2007, replacing former principal Bill Edwards.The school's mascot is the "Junior Blue." A recently passed bond issue will allow for intense construction and improvements to the school in the coming years, as enrollment has been up and overcrowding has begun to become an issue. The school won the State championship in football and basketball in 1985 and again in football in 1986 and 1989 under then head coach Ron Bowen, who has since been inducted into the KSHAA hall of fame. The Football stadium at the school, Bowen-Glaze Stadium, is named after Bowen and his defensive coordinator during the 80's. The school's football team has struggled in recent years, with the record of 3-32 in a 3 year span under now head coach Derrick Hammes. The school has also been praised for its notable distance learning Mandarin Chinese class.
