RCMP Heritage Centre

RCMP Heritage Centre

The RCMP Heritage Centre (French: "Le Centre du patrimoine de la GRC") was officially opened May 23, 2007 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is owned and operated by an independent nonprofit organization called the Mounted Police Heritage Centre and showcases a number of exhibits featuring the collection of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The artifact collection itself is the property of the RCMP.

The Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, the City of Regina and the RCMP announced the creation of the facility in early 2005. Construction began in October 2005. The first phase, a 70,000-square foot, $29-million building, designed by architect Arthur Erickson, is now open. Phase two plans for an additional 8,000 square feet of exhibits within the Centre along with historical landscaping, educational programming, and a travelling exhibit.

Located next to the Saskatchewan RCMP Headquarters, at 5907 Dewdney Avenue, and at the gateway of the RCMP Academy, Depot Division, the RCMP Heritage Centre, when fully completed, will be a $40 million project.

Education Central Focus of Exhibits
Through the use of permanent and temporary exhibits, multimedia technologies, and extensive programming, the Heritage Centre will tell the RCMP story and educate Canadians and the world about the past, present and future of the RCMP within Canada and abroad. Features of the RCMP Heritage Centre include:

Phase 1 exhibits:
Maintaining Law and Order in the West
Protecting the North
Serving All of Canada
Cracking the Case
and Duty Calls

A 100 ft. (30 m) long March of the Mounties sculptural procession runs the length of the main exhibit hall that demonstrates the evolution of the RCMP and of Canada through transportation. A 2,500 sq. ft. (232 m2) 125 seat custom-designed multimedia theatre is a prominent feature of the building’s architecture and contributes to the Centre’s experience by delivering an exciting and educational show. A 2,000 sq. ft. (186 m2) of temporary exhibit space will complete the story using rotating house and/or traveling exhibits from other institutions.

Phase 2 exhibits:
Stories from the RCMP, the RCMP in Popular Culture, and the Musical Ride
