"The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II)" is the name of a song written and recorded by Rod Stewart. It was released as a track on his album "A Night on the Town" in 1976. The song tells the true-life story of an acquaintance of Rod Stewart, Georgie, who was killed in New York City.
Although the song's lyrics state that Georgie died in 1975, this was for done for rhyming reasons only, his death actually occurring in 1974.
When released as a single, the song performed well in many major markets. The song's lyrics tell the poignant tale of a homosexual man, the titular Georgie, who was killed by a New Jersey gang. The song peaked at number 2 in the UK singles chart in September 1976.
The song is a favourite of Karl Pilkington, who has praised the song many times due to its lyrical content. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl commentated over the song on an early 27 April 2002 XFM episode.
Discussion was held on the Howard Stern Show about the similarities between this song and the Beatles song "Don't Let Me Down" which was released six years earler in 1970.
