Sobrescobio (Asturian: Sobrescubiu) is a municipality in the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias, Spain. It is bordered on the north by Piloña, on the east by Caso, on the south by Aller, and on the west by Laviana. It is situated in the southeast section of Asturias, at the eastern limit of the Nalón mineral basin.

It forms part of the Communal Valley of Nalón, together with Langreo, San Martín del Rey Aurelio, Laviana y Caso. With Caso, it forms part of the Parque natural de Redes .

Geography

The Ground

Limestone, Slate and seldom Sandstone are the typical rocks in this area. The Mountains from the Sierra Grandesllanes, Sierra Carderu, Sierra del Crespón, Sierra Mermeja and Sierra de Collaroces limit those Area with El Retriñón, (1.862 m) as highest point.

Rivers and Lakes

Río Nalon passes Sobrescobio.
The Rivers Rio del Alba, Rio Llaimu, Rio Nozalin and Rio Huegro formed those impressing landscape.
Rioseco, the Capital of Sobrescobio lies to the Reservoir "Embalse de Rioseco".

Climate

Warm Sommers and smooth, seldom hard Winters. In Spring and Autumn strong Storms are possible.

History

Prehistoric to Middle Ages

Almost everywhere in Asturia you find Prehistorian Signs, also in the region Sobrescobio. Some Hill Forts (at Agues (Soto de Agues), Campiellos and Corona de Castro) also Dolmen (at Pumarín, Unqueru, Campu La Braña und Monte Caón) are still visitable .
Also the Romans built some Bridges along the Rio Nalon Street which are until today.

Middle Ages to ...

In 1523, with the end of the Orden, Sobrescobio fell under the Constution of the Church. 1528,Philip II. sells Sobrescobio for the Price of 600.000 Maravedí to the Benedictine Monastery San Vicente of Oviedo. This was the first time, the name Sobrescobio was written in a Document.
During the Peninsular War General Bonet passed Sobrescobio on the way to theBattle of Salamanca.
During the Carlism revolution, the Town Council staied loyal, thats why the kept their Place in the asturian Parliament.

Economics

Agriculture dominated those area until the 19th century. The Chestnuts from Sobrescobio where well known in Spain. Falling Prices and the industrial expansion in Oviedo and Gijon made most of the Employees leaving Sobrescobio. The regional tourism is expanding especially by people, loving nature and silence.
