Elyria High School is a High School in Elyria, Ohio. Founded in 1830, it is notable for being the first chartered high school west of the Allegheny Mountains. The oldest section, the Washington Building (built in 1894), is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Technology building was built in 1913 with additions constructed in the 1920s. The red-brick Lincoln Building was built in the 1950s on the former site of Lincoln School which was completed in 1924. It connects the Washington and Technology buildings. The vocational building stands separate from the rest of the school. The last addition, including the big gym and auditorium, was completed in 1956.

Reconstruction

Due to Elyria High School's age and extremely poor condition, an issue known as Issue 7, passed on May 8, 2007, after three previous attempts. Issue 7 is a $45 million dollar tax levy to pay for the new school. It will cost less than $9 a month for a $100,000 home owner. The state of Ohio will pay the remaining $23 million of the $68 million dollar total cost. The money from Issue 7 along with the funding from the state of Ohio will be used to rebuild the high school on the same land, along with bought land in the surrounding area. The Washington Building will remain to be remodeled. According to state inspection, the buildings did not meet basic requirements and were in need of replacement. Construction of the high school has begun and is expected to conclude by 2010.

chool Songs

Alma Mater

All hail to thee, Elyria High,
In tribute halt we now.
In reverence that's deep and true
Our loyal heads we bow.
For time can never more destroy
The light of memories burning bright.
In days to come all through the years,
You'll guide us to your light.

As forward to our goal we go
From scenes and pleasures rare,
Our lips may e'er their story tell,
Our hearts found memories share.
And though the years roll on and on
We hail to her with heart and hand,
As first our school rose in the West,
So first she'll always stand.

Fight Song

Hurrah for Elyria High School
for she's alright
Keep the colors flying
for the cherry and white.

Show the other fellows
what we can do
Rah for Elyria High School
For she'll break through.
