Origin of Symmetry ". It was the first single that the band released from this album. The release date in the UK was05 March 2001 , and was released as a two-CD set and an accompanying limited edition 7" vinyl. The song also appears on the "Hullabaloo", "Absolution Tour " and the "HAARP" DVDs. There is a representation of three aliens on the single front cover made by Tanya Andrew, allegedly a then girlfriend of singer and guitaristMatthew Bellamy .The meaning of this song is unknown, but some have suggested that it could also be about his love for the
electric guitar , and how he only has to plug it in and play, for all his critics to be proven wrong ('crucifies my enemies'). Bizarrely, it could be about genetically engineering puppies to remain young and live forever, as Matt Bellamy has stated jovially in a magazine interview. [citeweb|url=http://pluginbaby.screenager.co.uk/extra.php|title=Interview with Matt Bellamy|accessdate=2 January|accessyear=2007]This song is widely praised for its intro riff, almost instantly recognisable for use of a rising triad motif to move through a distinctively harmonic minor scale. It made it to #5 in
Kerrang! 's Top 50 Riffs. The beginning of the riff shows similarities toBach 's "Toccata and Fugue ". Bellamy has also stated in a 2005 interview that it elaborates on the riff fromDJ Shadow 's track Organ Donor. The B-side "Nature_1" featured on the "
Hullabaloo Soundtrack " in the B-sides collection.Music Video
It shows the band playing in a single bedroom. As it progresses, many young women dressed in smart clothes start to arrive, appearing to be human but instead of normal legs, their legs are masses of undulating, silvery tentacle-like limbs.
At the very end, it shows Matt Bellamy holding his guitar upside-down and creating feedback.
