Adam Egede-Nissen

Adam Egede-Nissen (1868 – 1952), Norwegian Communist politician. Born in Levanger and he started his political involvement in the Liberal Party of Norway and was elected to the Storting in 1900. In 1905 he broke with the Liberal Party and joined the Norwegian Labour Party and became one of its leaders. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Egede-Nissen became sympathetic with the Bolsheviks and went to the Russian SFSR in 1918 where he met with Lenin. Egede-Nissen wanted the Norwegian Labour Party to join the Communist International, but the party remained social democratic and in 1923 Egede-Nissen became a founding member of the new Communist Party of Norway. He was the party's leader 1934 - 1946. During the Nazi occupation of Norway in World War II, Egede-Nissen first spent some years in exile living in Iceland, Canada and the United States, but in 1944 he returned to Finnmark in northern Norway where he participated in the struggle against the Nazis.

Egede-Nissen's daughters were the film actresses Aud Egede-Nissen and Gerd Grieg.
