- Rio Ruidoso
The Rio Ruidoso is a 30-mile long
river located in theSierra Blanca andSacramento Mountains in Lincoln County andOtero County, New Mexico in theUnited States and is part of theRio Ruidoso Watershed . The Spanish term "ruidoso" translated into English means literally "noisy river".The
headwaters for the Rio Ruidoso are located near the top of the 12,003-foot peak of the mountain called Sierra Blanca Peak in the ruggedSierra Blanca mountains, which is located within theMescalero Apache Indian Reservation . From there, the river winds its way down through theSacramento Mountains , which are part of theLincoln National Forest and through the village of Ruidoso, which was named after the river. Along its 30-mile course, the river drops 6000 feet in elevation.Several fish species live within the waters of the Rio Ruidoso, including:
