**Same-sex marriage in Canada:
***Richard North and Chris Vogel become first publicized couple to be married by the Unitarian-Universalist Church, although the government refuses to acknowledge their marriage.

**Elaine Noble becomes the first openly gay or lesbian individual to be elected to a state legislature when she is elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
