Edward Entwistle

Edward Entwistle

Edward Entwistle, born 1815 in Tyldesley, near Wigan, Lancashire was the world's first driver of a passenger train. Apprenticed as an engineer at the age of 11, he worked at the Bridgewater Trust works, where the Rocket locomotive was under construction.

When the work was completed, George Stephenson requested an assistant and the 20 year old Entwistle found himself on the footplate with the great engineer during the locomotive's first trials - eventually becoming its official driver when it began its twice daily service between Liverpool and Manchester. Entwistle later emigrated to the United States where he was a marine engineer. He subsequently became a farmer in the Mid West and died aged 81 in 1906.
