Ludgate Circus

Ludgate Circus

Ludgate Circus is a location in the City of London at the intersection of Farringdon Street/New Bridge Street (the A201, leading to Blackfriars Bridge) with Fleet Street/Ludgate Hill.

Historically the main connection between the cities of London and Westminster, Ludgate circus is situated on the course of the river Fleet, London's largest subterranean river. The circle of Ludgate Circus was constructed between 1864 to 1875. [http://www.ludgatecircus.com/ludgate_circus.htm] Haytor granite from Dartmoor in South Devon was used in the construction of Ludgate Circus, transported via the unique Haytor Granite Tramway.

Had the Fleet Line of the London Underground been built, it would have had a new station at Ludgate Circus. City Thameslink station and St. Paul's Cathedral are adjacent.
