Sandhurst Competition

Sandhurst Competition

The Sandhurst Military Skills Competition is a constantly evolving program that began in 1967. Today, it is a one-day event conducted annually at the United States Military Academy West Point, New York. Sandhurst features nearly 425 cadets, with teams from the United States Military Academy West Point, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy, Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), Canada's Royal Military College and 6 university ROTC teams including the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

Each USMA Cadet Company and Visiting Team selects a 9-member Squad (at least one member must be female) with two alternates. This squad is required to perform a series of military tasks along a 10 km route in less than 3 hours. Scores are determined by combining the points they earn by performing each military task along the route, with the points earned for completing the course within the 3-hour timeframe. Examples of traditional events include rapelling, building and crossing a one-rope bridge, rifle marksmanship, a raft paddle, 12' wall climb, and weapon handling skills.
