Rice is a surname that originated in Wales as an Anglicised transliteration of Rhys. The surname is also common in North-East Ireland as an Anglicised contraction of the Irish 'Ó Maolchraoibhe' (pron. O'Mulcreevy), though the two sets of Rices are not connected.
