He was the son of
Oliver Fisher Winchester and Jane Ellen Hope and was born inBaltimore . His siblings include: Ann Rebecca Winchester (1835-1864) who married Charles B. Dye; and Hannah Jane Winchester who married Thomas Gray Bennett. William marriedSarah Lockwood Pardee onSeptember 30 ,1862 . OnJuly 15 ,1866 , Sarah gave birth to their only child, Annie Pardee Winchester, but the baby died six weeks later ofmarasmus . William died inNew Haven, Connecticut onMarch 7 ,1881 oftuberculosis . He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven.Legacy
The William Wirt Winchester Hospital in
West Haven, Connecticut was established in his honor by his wife for the treatment of tuberculosis. The hospital was later sold and became a Veteran's Administration Hospital.
