Dillon was a skilful and creative
midfielder with great passing skills and excellent vision. Successes from set-pieces marked him out as an excellent striker of a dead ball. He began his career with Birmingham City as the last player to be given a debut by SirAlf Ramsey in 1977 as a 17 year old. He joined Reading from Newcastle United in 1991 after a previous spell with Portsmouth where he made over 200 league appearances. He stayed at Elm Park for two years, playing more than 100 games before joining Stevenage, later returning to Reading as a youth coach.Management career
Dillon was promoted to
first team coach of Reading Football Club in December 2001 under the management ofAlan Pardew , replacing Martin Allen helping the team gain promotion in his first season. He was previously reserve team manager and under 19s coach. He wascaretaker manager from10 September 2003 to3 October 2003 after the resignation ofAlan Pardew untilSteve Coppell was appointed.
