Smith was born in Minneapolis, and played for the U.S. National hockey team in 1963 after a wonderful career on the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher hockey team from 1958-1962 where he played in 70 games and scored a total of 29 career goals with 21 assists.

Smith died of pancreatic cancer in 2002 at age 63. His brother and favorite comrade of over 60 years, James R. Smith also died of pancreatic cancer July 3rd, 2008 at the age of 72.
