George Alan Rekers

George Alan Rekers, M.B.A., Ph.D., Th.D., FAACP is an American Distinguished Professor of Neuropsychiatry & Behavioral Science Emeritus at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in human developmental psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, his Th.D. from the University of South Africa, and his MBA from Southern Wesleyan University. His academic resume, list of books and articles published, and additional information can be found at his professional website: http://www.professorgeorge.com/

Professor Rekers was previously a Research Fellow in Psychology and Social Relations and a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. He was awarded the Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology.

While at Harvard University, Dr. Rekers published the first experimental treatment study demonstrating that childhood cross-gender identity could be therapeutically reversed to a normal gender identity that matches the child's anatomy.

In addition to his clinical psychology practice and expert courtroom testimony, Professor Rekers has published well over one hundred academic journal articles and book chapters and ten books, including the Handbook of Child and Adolescent Sexual Problems (Simon & Schuster) for which he served as the editor. He is the author of the book, Susan Smith: Victim or Murderer.

His work has been supported by fellowships, contracts, and grants exceeding one million dollars from private foundations and governmental entities, including the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health.

Dr. Rekers has delivered many invited research presentations on child and family variables before committees of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, and has served as an invited expert for White House staff and several presidential cabinet agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services. He has delivered over two hundred invited lectures in universities and academic societies in dozens of countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and in Western and Eastern Europe.

Professor Rekers served as one of the multidisciplinary experts for the legal team that successfully defended the state of Florida’s law prohibiting adoption of children by homosexually-behaving individuals all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case Lofton v. Secretary of the Department of Children and Family Services. Dr. Rekers is a past recipient of the NARTH Sigmund Freud Award for his research contributions on child gender identity disorder.

However, Dr Rekers is not without controversy. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, he freely relies on the data of Paul Cameron, a researcher who was dismissed from the American Psychological Association for misrepresenting work about homosexuality.

In addition, Rekers favors the controversial but unproven idea of "conversion therapy" or attempts to "cure" people of homosexuality.

Rekers has testified in court that he believes the Bible to be the infalliable word of God and that homosexuality is a sin. His personal beliefs regarding homosexuality, according to the ACLU, interferes with his being able to give an unbiased professional opinion on lgbts topics, including gay adoption.

Rekers was an expert witness in a 2004 case involving gay adoption in Arkansas. The state had banned gays from adopting in 1999. In January 2005, Pulaski County Circuit Judge Timothy White ruled against the state of Arkansas. Furthermore, he called Rekers's testimony "extremely suspect." He also accused Rekers of testifying solely for promoting his "own personal agenda."

In 1983 Rekers was on the founding board of the Family Research Council, a non-profit Christian lobbying organization, along with James Dobson and Armand Nicholi Jr. [http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Family_Research_Council&redirect=no]
