Lawrence Hargrave Drive

Lawrence Hargrave Drive is a road that runs along a narrow part of the east Australian coast known as the Northern Illawarra. The road begins at Helensburgh and passes Stanwell Tops to descend Bald Hill (one of only five roads to descend the Illawarra Escarpment). The road then passes south through Stanwell Park and Coalcliff to cross the renowned Sea Cliff Bridge. The Sea Cliff Bridge construction was completed in December 2005, replacing the old cliff-hugging route which was prone to landfalls. The road then makes it way through various coastal villages such as Scarborough, Wombarra, Coledale and finally Thirroul where it meets the Princes Highway to come to an end. Many lookouts are on the route and at Bald Hill there is a famous lookout as well as a hang-gliding ground.

The road is named after Lawrence Hargrave, a famous Australian aviation pioneer and explorer who had a house at Stanwell Park and flew his devices from Bald Hill.
