is a town located in Kasuya District, Fukuoka,
Japan .As of 2003, the town has an estimated
population of 38,545 and a density of 1,275.48 persons per km². The total area is 30.22 km².The town has a river, the Umigawa flowing through it, a large
Hachiman shrine, and some ancientburial mounds . (Kofun ) It is reputedly the birthplace ofEmperor Ōjin , an early JapaneseEmperor .A railway was built in 1919 to facilitate the removal of
coal , but this local industry ended in 1963. The railway line was closed in 1985 and has been made into a pleasant semi rural walkway. Umi is still linked to Hakata by another JR line, theSasaguri Line . Ban-daisake is also made in Umi.External links
