- Stephen Thorsett
Stephen Erik Thorsett (b.
December 3 ,1964 inNew Haven, Connecticut ) is an Americanprofessor and astronomer. His research interests includeradio pulsars andgamma ray bursts . He is best known for measurements of the masses ofneutron star s and for the use of binary pulsars to test the theory ofgeneral relativity . In 2004, with collaboratorsIngrid Stairs andZaven Arzoumanian , he made the first measurement of gravitational spin-orbit coupling in a binary system [http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v93/e141101] . He helped discover the oldest known extrasolar planet and was the first to suggest that a nearby gamma ray burst might cause a mass extinction event.Thorsett is a professor of astronomy and
astrophysics at theUniversity of California, Santa Cruz , and dean of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences since July 1, 2006 [http://currents.ucsc.edu/05-06/05-22/thorsett.asp] . Currently he is working with his Ph.D. studentBülent Kızıltan on high energy astrophysics, particularly on the "Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope" (GLAST ) and pulsars. He is also a collaborator on the upcomingNuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array x-ray satellite experiment. He received a B.A. in
mathematics fromCarleton College in 1987 and an M.A. (1989) andPh.D. (1991) inphysics fromPrinceton University . He was aRobert A. Millikan Research Fellow in physics atCaltech and an assistant professor of physics at Princeton before joining UCSC in 1999. He received the Ernest F. Fullam Award of theDudley Observatory in 1994, and was named anAlfred P. Sloan Fellow in 1997. With graduate school classmatesNathan Newbury ,Michael J. Newman ,John Ruhl , andSuzanne Staggs he is the author of the textbook "Princeton Problems in Physics" (Princeton University Press, 1991), ISBN 0691024499. He is a co-editor of three volumes for theAstronomical Society of the Pacific : "Planets around Pulsars" (vol. 36, 1993), ISBN 0937707554; "Radio Pulsars" (vol. 302, 2003), ISBN 1583811516; and "Extreme Solar Systems (vol. 398, 2008), ISBN 9781583816660.External links
