MacHale Information Nickname(s) Dimond Species Human (Second Earth) Gender Male Occupation Acolyte Family Mother and Father Spouse(s) (In Epilogue)Marie Dimond Children (In Epilogue)3 Mark Dimond (pronounced /ˈdaɪmənd/, like diamond) is one of the major characters of D. J. MacHale's fictional series, The Pendragon Adventure.
Mark Dimond is the life-long best friend of the protagonist of the series, Bobby Pendragon. In the first book of the series, The Merchant of Death, he is fourteen years old, but by book eight, The Pilgrims of Rayne, he is seventeen years old. He loves eating carrots as he thinks they improve eyesight. He is a member of the prestigious science club at his school called Sci-clops. He is the pioneer of the technology he invented called Forge. He plans to release the technology on First Earth. He and Bobby's friend Courtney Chetwynde are Bobby's Acolytes. They keep his journals secret from the other citizens of Second Earth. After a dangerous incident involving the Traveler's nemesis, Saint Dane, Mark and Courtney decide to stow Bobby's journals in a bank vault, in Stony Brook, Connecticut, where they live.
Owing to a complex series of events, Mark is fooled into trusting his longtime tormentor, Andy Mitchell, who is really Saint Dane in a different form. Through Saint Dane's treachery, Mark is tricked into abandoning his position as acolyte. Saint Dane fools Mark into using a flume (a wormhole through time and space) in order to rescue Mark's parents, who appear to have died in a plane crash. Mark travels back in time through the flume and alters history, an issue which books seven and eight tentatively deal with. Eventually, and through assistance provided by Courtney, he realizes Andy Mitchell is in fact Saint Dane. After this revelation, he regains his post as acolyte and rejoins Courtney in the fight against Saint Dane.
Mark is described as being small and thin and long curly black hair that always seems a little unwashed. He is also described as being very smart. In The Pilgrims of Rayne, dados made in his image appear on Third Earth. The only difference is that they have no acne and are taller.
In Raven Rise, Mark undergoes a significant maturation, specifically after the revelation to Courtney and him by Saint Dane that it was his ring that Alexander Naymeer is using to push Second Earth towards chaos. Mark is thrown into a state of shock, telling Courtney that everything is his fault and that maybe he should quit. Fortunately, however, Courtney brings him to his senses with a slap, giving him a motivational speech afterwards. Mark seems to change after that, displaying quick thinking and the ability to act fast in danger. After his "change", Mark does not stutter once.
Unfortunately, Mark, along with Courtney and many other anti-Ravinians, are thrown into the flume by Naymeer, the first of thousands of victims exiled this way. For some time, it was unknown whether Mark or Courtney (or the other people) were alive or dead.
In Book 10, Mark ends up on Third Earth alive. By the time Bobby finds him, he has aged 5 years, and is now the leader of a band of rebels looking to destroy the Ravanians. He has changed significantly and repeatedly showed bravery and selflessness throughout the book.
In the final epilogue(an alternate change in Bobby's life), Mark dies suddenly from a heart attack just before his 40th birthday. He leaves behind 3 children and a wife.
In D.j Machale's "The Light" Mark Dimond is mentioned by the main character Marshall Seaver in the first chapter.
