Elmer James Ryan (
May 26 ,1907 –February 1 ,1958 ) was a Representative fromMinnesota ; born in Rosemount,Dakota County, Minnesota ,May 26 ,1907 ; attended the public schools; was graduated from the law department of theUniversity of Minnesota atMinneapolis in 1929; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice inSouth St. Paul, Minnesota ; city attorney of South St. Paul 1933 – 1934; delegate to theDemocratic National Conventions in 1936 and 1940; elected as a Democrat to the 74th, 75th, and 76th congresses (January 3 ,1935 –January 3 ,1941 ); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1940 to the 77th congress; resumed the practice of law; entered active duty in theUnited States Army onJune 23 ,1942 , as a lieutenant in theSelective Service ; was promoted to captain and transferred to the Judge Advocate General’s department, later promoted to major and was discharged onOctober 1 ,1945 ; again resumed the practice of law in South St. Paul, Minnesota; died in an automobile accident on Highway 35, five miles north ofSomerset, Wisconsin ,February 1 ,1958 ; interment inRosemount Cemetery , Rosemount, Minnesota.References
