Herbert Drury (gymnast) .Herbert Joseph Drury (born
March 2 ,1895 in Midland,Ontario –July 1 , 1965 inPittsburgh ,Pennsylvania ) was aCanadian /American professionalice hockey defenseman who played 6 seasons in theNational Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Quakers. Following his retirement from professional hockey Drury became a steamfitter in Pittsburgh. Drury died in 1965 and is interred at Calvary Cemetery.Playing career
Drury joined the
Pittsburgh Yellowjackets of the USAHA in 1916. In 1918-19 he was called by the military service and didn't return to hockey until 1921. He continued playing in the USAHA until 1925 when he signed as a free agent with thePittsburgh Pirates (NHL) . He played with the Pirates for 5 seasons, followed by one with thePhiladelphia Quakers (NHL) .International play
Although Canadian born, Herb Drury was best known for being a member of the U.S. Olympic team that played in the first
Winter Games atChamonix ,France in 1924. Drury recorded an astounding 22 goals along with 3 assists, for a total of 25 points in the tournament. After defeating team Sweden 20-0, the U.S. settled for the silver medal following a 6-1 defeat to Canada. Drury scored the lone American goal during the Gold medal game.External links
