- Giovanni Jona-Lasinio
Giovanni Jona-Lasinio (born 1932), sometimes called Gianni Jona, is an influent Italian theoretical physicist, best known for his works about
quantum field theory andstatistical mechanics . He has been a pioneer in research concerningspontaneous symmetry breaking , and the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model is named after him. At present, he holds a faculty position in the Physics Department of Università degli studi di Roma "La Sapienza", and is a full member ofAccademia dei Lincei .Life
Giovanni Jona-Lasinio was born in
Florence ; his father was Jewish, his mother Italian. From 1970 to 1974 he taughtElettrodynamics atUniversity of Padova . Since 1974 he is full professor at University of Rome "La Sapienza", where he teachesmathematical methods for Physics . Anyway, he has spent several years abroad, doing his research also atUniversity of Chicago (1959-60),CERN (1964-65),MIT (1965-66),Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (1980-81),Université Pierre et Marie Curie (1983-84). In 2004, theJournal of Statistical Physics , one of the best scientific magazines about statistical mechanics, has dedicated a special issue in honor of Giovanni Jona-Lasinio.See also
