Origin

Cowan House was founded, as a private venture, in 1948 by David and Joy Black in Mountain Rise, Pietermaritzburg. It was a boys only school.

History

The number of pupils grew to 12 by the end of the first year, to 36 in 1949 and by the end of 1950 enrolment had increased to nearly 50.

When the area was rezoned, the school purchased a 10 hectare property in Hilton and reopened in 1965.

In January 1997 the entire boarding establishment was reduced to ashes in a fire during the school holidays, and then rebuilt by the end of that year.

1999 saw the inclusion of girls into the school and Cowan House now has over 300 pupils.

Boarding

Predominantly a day school, we also provide termly, weekly or casual boarding to any of our children. We have a fully qualified sister on duty at all times.
