*Newcastle Rebels, who played in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership 1908-1909, left when a local Newcastle competitor was formed, replaced by Annandale

Ice hockey

* January 5 - The National Hockey Association (NHA) starts its inaugural season.
* January 15 - The Canadian Hockey Association disbands. Ottawa and Montreal Shamrocks join the NHA.
* March 15 - Montreal Wanderers win the NHA championship and the Stanley Cup. The club then defeats the Berlin Union Jacks in a challenge. It is the fifth season in a row that the Wanderers have won the Cup outright or won a Cup challenge.
* March - The Toronto St. Michael's Majors win the Allan Cup.
* December - The NHA loses Cobalt and Haileybury teams, gains a Quebec team. The Les Canadiens are taken over by George Kennedy's Club Athletique Canadien after threatening legal action.
