Saint Paul School of Theology

Saint Paul School of Theology

Saint Paul School of Theology is a school of higher learning in Kansas City, Missouri.

Saint Paul School of Theology was one of two schools authorized by the 1956 General Conference of the Methodist Church. Due to the shortage of Methodist pastors in the Midwest, Kansas City was selected as the location. The seminary was chartered in 1958, and the first group of fifty students began classes in 1959.

Today, Saint Paul is one of thirteen seminaries of the United Methodist Church. Degree Programs include Master of Divinity, M.A. Theology, M.A. Specialized Ministry, and Doctor of Ministry. Although many students live on campus, still others in the Master of Divinity program commute to school and hold various ministry positions throughout Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, along with a few other states. Saint Paul students and faculty are committed to their spiritual life and dedicated to making a difference in their communities through practical theology and mission activity.

Saint Paul's theology is perhaps best described as moderate relative to the overall body of views and lifestyles that encompass the United Methodist Church in the USA. In the 1970s and 1980's, figures on the faculty such as Eugene Lowry, Tex Sample, Lindsey Pherigo, and John Swomley placed the school on the leading edge of theological involvement in social equality and higher criticism of Scripture and theology.
