James W. Ford

James W. Ford (1893 - 1957) was an American communist. He was vice-presidential candidate for the Communist Party USA in 1932, 1936 and 1940. A Party organizer from New York City, Ford was the first African American to appear on a presidential ticket in the 20th century.In 1935 Ford, along with James S. Allen wrote "The Negroes in a Soviet America," published by the Workers Library Publishers. Ford and Allen claimed that only a Soviet (Communist) government can give Negroes full equality. On page 38 they wrote, "Any act of discrimination or of prejudice against a Negro will become a crime under revolutionary law."This objective of the Communist Party was eventually adopted by U.S. federal courts.
