Viscount Goschen, of Hawkhurst in the County of Kent, is a title in the
Peerage of the United Kingdom . It was created in 1900 for the politician George Joachim Goschen upon his retirement from a long political career, during which he served variously asMember of Parliament ,Vice-President of the Board of Trade ,Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ,President of the Poor Law Board ,Chancellor of the Exchequer andFirst Lord of the Admiralty . His son, the second Viscount, sat as a ConservativeMember of Parliament for East Grinstead and served asGovernor of Madras .His nephew, the third Viscount, served as
Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard (Deputy Chief Whip in theHouse of Lords ) in the Conservative administrations ofHarold Macmillan , Sir Alec Douglas-Home andEdward Heath . As of 2006 the title is held by the latter's son, the fourth Viscount. He held junior ministerial positions in the Conservative government ofJohn Major and is now one of the ninety electedhereditary peer s that remain in the House of Lords after the passing of theHouse of Lords Act 1999 .
