Alberto José Callaspo (pronEng|kaɪˈ̪æspoʊ̪ in English, and IPA|/kaˈʎaspo/ in Spanish; born April 19, 1983 in Maracay, Venezuela) is a baseball infielder for the Kansas City Royals. He was originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels organization, but only played in their minor league system.

Minor league career

In 2006, Callaspo was named the Diamondbacks' Minor League Player of the Year after hitting .337 with an on-base percentage of .404 in 114 games at AAA Tucson.

2001

Batted .356 (98/275) with 11 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 39 RBI in 66 games with Angels of Dominican Summer League...Also posted .403 on-base percentage.

2002

Batted .338 (101/299) with 16 doubles, 10 triples, three home runs and 60 RBI in 70 games with rookie-level Provo...10 triples set career-high...Led Pioneer League in at-bats (299), runs, triples and strikeouts per plate appearance (1/23.14)...Also ranked second in total bases (146), fourth in average, fifth in extra-base hits (29) and games...Voted by Baseball America as Pioneer League All-Star and was named to Pioneer League All-Star team.

2003

Led Midwest League with .327 average (168/514) and 38 doubles while with Arkansas...Also led league in hits (168), ranked second in runs (86) and strikeouts per plate appearance (1/20.18) and fifth in at-bats (514)...Set careerhighs in runs (86), doubles and stolen bases (20)...Was voted by Baseball America as Midwest League Low Class A All-Star and to Sportsticker's All-Teen Team...Named to Midwest League All-Star team...Earned Organization Co-Player of the Year and Topps Midwest Player of the Month for July.

Callaspo hit .337 with Tucson with 24 doubles, 12 triples, seven home runs and 68 RBIs.

Major league career

2006

The switch-hitting utility infielder, who was named the organization's Minor League player of the year, made six starts at the big-league level, hitting .238 with six RBIs, one double and one triple.

Career Transactions

On February 28,2006 The Los Angeles Angels traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for pitcher Jason Bulger.

On December 14, 2007, the Diamondbacks traded him to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for pitcher Billy Buckner.

Personal life

Callaspo was arrested on Thursday, May 10, 2007 by Phoenix police for domestic violence at his home; the charge was later dropped. He and his wife, Marianny Paola, remain together, and they have one child.

Trivia

On May 19, 2008 Callaspo made the final out of Jon Lester's no-hitter striking out on a 1-2 pitch.
