He picked up the Magic game after sustaining a football injury in high school, and has gone on to become one of the most celebrated players in the game's history, earning the nickname "The Great One".With , Grand Prix and Masters Series wins, along with the 1999-2000 Player of the Year title, and runner up in the , he has almost received the highest honor a Magic player can (A win at the Grand Prix, Pro Tour, Invitational, and Worlds).
In 2002, Maher was suspended from the DCI for 6 months for committing tournament fraud. He used the rating points gained in the tournaments to qualify for the World Championships.
As his prize for winning the 2004 Magic Invitational, Maher designed the card " [http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?name=dark%20confidant Dark Confidant] ", which bears his likeness.
He was selected as part of the 2006 induction class.
