Buentello grew up in
Amarillo, Texas and graduated from Caprock High School, the same alma mater as another well known UFC fighter namedEvan Tanner . Buentello received the nickname "The Headhunter" due to his propensity, in his early years of martial arts training, to kick for the head of his opponent.Career
In his debut in the
UFC , he had an impressive win overJustin Eilers with a KO in 3:34 of the first round for his debut fight in "UFC 51: Super Saturday" on February 2 2005. His next fight was against UFC newcomer Kevin "The Shaman" Jordan on "UFC 53: Heavy Hitters" on June 4 2005 where Buentello won with a guillotine choke submission at 4:00 of the first round. He lost a title shot against UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski at "UFC 55: Fury" on October 7 2005. Buentello was knocked out on the first punch landed by Arlovski, and fell directly on top of his opponent, which made it difficult for the audience on hand, and even the announcers to realize what had happened. Following his loss to Arlovski, he faced off againstGilbert Aldana at "UFC 57 " where he won via TKO (strikes). It was after this fight that Buentello infamously addressed the crowd in his post-fight interview, expecting them to finish his catchphrase "Don't fear me, fear the consequences!" After uttering the first half of the phrase, Buentello was met with utter silence from the audience.Buentello won his first two fights for the
Strikeforce promotion. He defeatedDavid "Tank" Abbott via KO in only 43 seconds. He then scored a Round 2 victory by (TKO) stoppage over veteran heavyweightRuben Villareal . Buentello is married and has two daughters.
