Ian D. Marsden

Ian David Marsden (Ian D. Marsden) (born August 24, 1967) is a cartoonist, designer and artist. Born in Greenwich Village, (New York City) Currently he resides and works in Los Angeles and Southern France with his wife Sheryl and their two daughters. Ian previously lived, studied and worked in Zurich, Switzerland / New York / Paris, France / Barbados, West Indies, Santa Monica and Culver City.

He has sold cartoons and illustrations to various international publications including Mad Magazine, The New Yorker and many others and his artwork has been seen in advertising campaigns and even on Coca Cola cans. He was nominated for the National Cartoonist Society award in the [http://www.reuben.org/ncs/archive/divisions/others2.asp New Media category] in 2002.

Ian was one of the very first Google Doodle creators for Google.com starting in May 2000 with the [http://www.google.com/doodle.html abduction of the Google Logo by aliens] and also designed the character of the [http://www.google.com/doodle3.html Kangaroo Doodle] which ran on Google during the Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.

As a character designer he created Smoony the official mascot for the Alpine Ski World Championship 2003 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He was also contracted by Expo.02 - the 6th Swiss national exposition - to design the official mascot and entire character worlds for each of the arteplages.

His first cartoons were published at age 16 in the Swiss satirical magazine Nebelspalter. He also wrote and illustrated a TV show at the same age for Swiss Television DRS and maintained an atelier in the old town of Zurich, the Niederdorf for several years. He has worked as an art director, illustrator and multimedia artist internationally since then. In 2006 Ian was invited to draw the U.S. soccer team for the Football Heroes book project which encompasses over 700 individual player portraits from current and classic soccer teams drawn by 50 illustrators from 17 different countries released in time for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

As the creative director for LA based Ja-Tail Enterprises, LLC (distributed through Universal Music Group) he has designed album covers and websites for artists such as La Toya Jackson.

Ian studied graphic design, illustration and in 2001 graduated from the animation department Academy of Entertainment Technology, Santa Monica College.

Ian is currently working on a graphic novel, children's books and a TV show project.

Exhibitions

Ian has participated in many group exhibitions internationally. Some of Ian's large scale pop art canvases depicting the likes of John Wayne, Clark Gable, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra are on permanent display in the restaurant at the historic Culver Hotel where Ian used to have a studio on the second floor. (As a footnote: The hotel bar 'Duke's Hideaway' was also designed by Ian.)
