EugenioSarcófago (Portuguese for "sarcophagus") was a
Brazil ianextreme metal band. They were very influential to extreme metal in general but especially to the "second wave" of black metal. They were fronted byWagner Lamounier , the original frontman forSepultura , and Geraldo Minelli. The band was influenced by Venom,Slayer ,Celtic Frost ,Mercyful Fate and Bathory. The band is regarded as one of the main inspirations of the
corpse paint style make-up, which eventually became an ensignia of the early 1990s black metal scene of Norway and its offspring in the rest of Europe and the United States.Biography
Sarcófago was formed in 1985 in
Belo Horizonte ,Minas Gerais ,Brazil . Wagner "Antichrist" Lamounier, who was just kicked out ofSepultura a few months after their formation, wanted to start his own band. He was vocalist and lead guitarist, and then recruited bassistGerald "Incubus" Minelli , rhythm guitaristZeber "Butcher" , and drummerArmando "Leprous" . Although Sepultura never recorded anything with Lamounier, their partnership with Sarcófago is present in their first release,Bestial Devastation , on the song "Antichrist". Sarcófago's first two songs were included in the "Warfare Noise Volume 1 " compilation in 1986, which are "The Black Vomit" and "Satanás". The three other bands featured on the album,Mutilator ,Chakal andHolocausto , were also part of theBrazilian thrash metal scene.Because Lamounier left Sepultura due to ideological and musical divergences, his appearance with a new band and their debut in their demo
Satanic Lust caused a situation involving several gossips, bad tempers, mutual accusations, shouts and, of course, fights. Sarcófago didn't become as famous as Sepultura. Regardless, the band have released several albums through the popular labelCogumelo Discos , and touredSouth America andEurope . Their albums were released throughMusic for Nations in Europe. The band left a widespread yet often uncredited influence amongblack metal circles worldwide, particularly the second wave, which includes bands like Satyricon (who covered their song "I.N.R.I."),Darkthrone ,Mayhem ,Impaled Nazarene (who covered The Black Vomit), and Beherit (who covered "Satanás", renamed asHail Sathanas ).Fact|date=October 2007Lyrical Approach
From their formation to disbandment, Sarcófago have always had an extreme anti-christian ideology. Their lyrics are extremely blasphemous and sometimes promote
Sodomy . The band's first lyrical approach also usually contained topics such asdeath ,sex ,alcohol , andSatanism . On 1990's Rotting, the lyrics seemed more polemic for the atheistic content, as can be seen on the title track. For the next three albums, the band used themes more elaborated, but keeping the polemical speech.Discography
