Jackson joined Derby County in March 1999. His first game for Derby came in a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United in May 2000, which was shortly followed by an appearance in a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea. He made three appearances in the 2000-01 season followed by seven appearances in the 2001-02 season, at the end of which Derby were relegated to the Championship. He broke into the first team on a regular basis in the 2002-03 season, during which he made 21 appearances, and was offered a new contract at the end of the season.
