Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope

Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope

The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) was one of the four scientific instruments on NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite. It detected individual gamma rays with energy from 30 MeV to 30 GeV.

One of EGRET's major achievements was the production of a catalog of 271 point sources of high-energy gamma rays. More than half of these remain unidentified with any objects visible in other wavelength bands. The identified sources are mostly blazars, with a few pulsars and other types of objects.

There is a broad band of gamma-ray emission along the Milky Way. This is caused by cosmic rays colliding with interstellar gas in our galaxy.
