Black Market Records is an independent record label (sub-label) which was founded in 1988, and run by Ced Singleton & Guy Kozowyk, the singer of Boston, MA based metal band The Red Chord. Black Market Records (or BMA, as it is often referred to) was started with the goal of releasing records by bands that are pushing the boundaries of extreme music while keeping a friendly artist centered attitude that steers clear of a lot of the "major label" business-like dealings that tend to hurt and exploit bands. Since the founder of the label is in an extreme metal band himself, he understands the issues that are important to the bands on his label and does a good job of balancing the business and art aspects of the music world. BMA is a tight knit group of bands and friends who share similar ideas and musical tastes. In the years since its creation BMR has grown quickly and gained much recognition. Black Market Activities teamed up with legendary metal record label Metal Blade Records on a production and distribution deal which allows all BMA & BMR releases to reach the same major stores as Metal Blade releases. This has propelled BMA and all its bands forward quite a bit. It has also, however, lead to some confusion as to what bands are on BMA and what bands are on Metal Blade. Since both record labels logos now appear on the backs of all BMA releases many people mistakenly assume that bands who are signed with Black Market Activities are on Metal Blade Records. BMR is not a subsidiary of Metal Blade, it is a separate entity.
