The flumph is a monster found in the "Dungeons & Dragons" fantasy roleplaying game. It is said to be one of the most ridiculous creatures created for the game.

Flumphs are described as sentient, and are the only Lawful Good creatures in the original "Fiend Folio".

Flumphs' favored class in 3.x edition D&D, according to the adventure "Box of Flumph," is sorcerer.

Physical description

Flumphs are depicted as similar in appearance to jellyfish. However they move through air rather than water, and unlike jellyfish have eyes on stalks.

Flumphs are said to be completely helpless if flipped on to their 'back'.

Publishing history

Flumphs were first introduced in the "Fiend Folio" monster sourcebook for "D&D 1st Edition", and were updated and much improved for "D&D 2nd Edition" rules in the "Monstrous Compendium Annual Vol. 2" and were added to "D&D 3rd Edition" in the "Tome of Horrors" from Necromancer Games along with a bunch of monsters from earlier editions that were not in the 3E "Monster Manual". In "Dungeon" magazine #118, the flumph was added to the array of 3.5 official monsters in "Box of Flumph," an adventure by Tim Hitchcock.

Flumphs in other media

Flumphs have been featured in the comic strip "The Order of the Stick". A running joke is that one of a pair of flumphs accidentally serves to cushion the landing of falling characters.

The flumph was referenced (alongside ascomoid) in an April Fool's joke by license-holders Wizards of the Coast which announced the release of improbable Modron miniatures.
