- Ulrich von Jungingen
Ulrich von Jungingen (1360 –
July 15 1410 ) was the 26th Grand Master of theTeutonic Knights , serving from 1407-10. His policy of confrontation with theGrand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland led to disaster for the Order in theBattle of Grunwald .Born in
Jungingen in southwesternGermany , Ulrich moved to theOrdenstaat in Prussia and resided in Schlochau (Człuchów). He wasKomtur ofBalga (1396 – 1404) and Marshal and Komtur ofKönigsberg (1404–07). When his elder brother Grand MasterKonrad von Jungingen died in 1407, Ulrich was chosen the next grand master.Ulrich led the German forces against Poland and Lithuania in the
Polish-Lithuanian-Teutonic War . However, he was killed in the Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) in 1410.The painting "Battle of Grunwald" by
Jan Matejko supposedly illustrates the moment when Ulrich, dressed in white with a black cross, is killed by infantry when trying to attackVytautas the Great , Grand Duke of Lithuania.Literatur
