HMS Hibernia

HMS Hibernia

Four ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS "Hibernia" after the Latin name of Ireland.

* "Hibernia", a seventy-four ship of the line launched in 1765, and renamed "Prince of Wales"
* "Hibernia" (1804), a 110-gun ship of the line launched in 1804 and broken up almost a century later, having served for many years as the base flagship at Malta
* "Hibernia" was launched as HMS "Achilles" in 1863 but was briefly renamed "Hibernia" between 1902 and 1904.
* "Hibernia" (1905), a pre-dreadnought battleship ("King Edward VII" class) launched in 1905. On 2 May 1912, she became the first ship to launch an aircraft whilst moving.
