Topolovgrad (Тополовград, "town of poplars") is a town in southeastern
Bulgaria , part ofHaskovo Province . It is situated at the northern foot of theSakar Mountain .The town had the Turkish name "Kavaklı" (from Turkish "kavak", "poplar") during the
Ottoman rule of Bulgaria and until1934 . About 4,000Greeks emigrated from the town and its surroundings around1925 , with compact groups of Bulgarian refugees fromWestern Thrace , Eastern Thrace,Asia Minor and Macedonia coming at their place. Topolovgrad and the surrounding area have otherwise been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by thedolmen s found at Hlyabovo and thePaleokastro fortress that may have been built by theThracians .Gallery
