February 18 1827 -March 31 1903 ) was aUnited States Senator fromOregon . Born inWestborough, Massachusetts , he moved with his parents toWhite Creek, New York in 1831. He attended the common schools, engaged in mercantile pursuits inCambridge, New York in 1840, and attendedCambridge Academy . He moved toNew York City in 1843 and was employed in the mercantile business until 1851; in the latter year he went with a stock of goods aroundCape Horn toPortland, Oregon and engaged in a general merchandising business, later changing to wholesale hardware. He became largely interested in banking, railroads, building, and investments, and was city treasurer of Portland, a member of the city council, and chairman of the Republican State central committee.Corbett was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate and served from
March 4 ,1867 , toMarch 3 ,1873 ; he was not a candidate for reelection in 1873 and resumed business interests. He was appointed to the U.S. Senate onMarch 6 ,1897 to fill the vacancy in the term beginningMarch 4 ,1897 , theOregon Legislative Assembly having failed to elect, but was not permitted to qualify. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the U.S. Senate in 1901. He served as president of theLewis and Clark Centennial Exposition from January 1902 until his death in Portland in 1903.
