U.S. state located inFlorida .English adventurer
William Augustus Bowles was elected director general of the State of Muskogee by a congress of Creeks andSeminoles in1799 . Both these tribes speakMuskogean languages . At the time they were living in land claimed by both theUnited States of America andSpain . With no European origin power having full hegemony over their land the Creek and Seminole hoped to be able to create their own independent nation. Bowles, who had married both Creek and Cherokee wives, hoped to also incorporate the Cherokee into this new state, but that goal was not achieved. The village of Mikasuke (nearTallahassee ) was the capital of this state. In1803 , Bowles was taken into custody by the Spanish and died in prison inHavana .
