Marie Jaffrey Smith

Marie Jaffrey Smith (born on June 3, 1926) is a former Scottish field hockey player, coach and writer. She was trained at Bedford College of Physical Education. Whilst at college she played hockey for the college team, for the Midland territory of England and for the Anglo-Scots. She returned to Scotland to teach and was selected for the East and North Midlands districts in turn. She won twenty consecutive 'caps', sometimes playing centre-forward, sometimes right wing. She toured with the Scottish Touring Teams to Amsterdam and South Africa before retiring to marry and look after a family of five.

She was national coach to the Scottish Under 23, Reserve and International Teams from 1972 - 1978. Special achievements include a Scottish win over England at Wembley in 1975 and the publication of two books published by Kaye and Ward: 'Women's Hockey for the 70's' (1974) and 'Hockey Coaching; a psychological Approach to the Women's game'(1977). Drawing much from her love of football she revolutionised tactical approaches and practices within the modern game.
