Marie Jaffrey Smith (born on
June 3 ,1926 ) is a former Scottishfield hockey player, coach and writer. She was trained at Bedford College of Physical Education. Whilst at college she played hockey for the college team, for the Midland territory ofEngland and for theAnglo-Scots . She returned to Scotland to teach and was selected for the East and North Midlands districts in turn. She won twenty consecutive 'caps', sometimes playingcentre-forward , sometimesright wing . She toured with the Scottish Touring Teams toAmsterdam andSouth Africa before retiring to marry and look after a family of five.She was national coach to the Scottish Under 23, Reserve and International Teams from 1972 - 1978. Special achievements include a Scottish win over England at
Wembley in 1975 and the publication of two books published by Kaye and Ward: 'Women's Hockey for the 70's' (1974) and 'Hockey Coaching; a psychological Approach to the Women's game'(1977). Drawing much from her love of football she revolutionised tactical approaches and practices within the modern game.
