- Kilkenny (Dáil Éireann constituency)
Kilkenny is a former parliamentary
constituency represented inDáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish parliament orOireachtas . Covering the whole ofCounty Kilkenny , it existed from1937 to1948 . It elected three Teachtaí Dála (TDs) to the Dáil, using theSingle Transferable Vote method ofproportional representation (PR-STV).History
The constituency was created for the 1937 general election, when the
Electoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935 split the old Carlow-Kilkenny constituency, withCounty Carlow being represented from 1937 through the new Carlow-Kildare constituency.Under the
Electoral (Amendment) Act 1947 , the Kilkenny constituency was abolished, and Carlow-Kilkenny was restored for the 1948 general election.Boundaries
Some Dáil Éireann constituencies cross county boundaries in order to ensure a reasonably consistent ratio of electors to TDs. However, the 1937 Act defines the boundaries of the Kilkenny constituency as being simply "the administrative County of Kilkenny".
