Hans-Jochen Vogel (born
February 3 1926 inGöttingen ) is a Germanpolitician .Vogel was born in
Göttingen . He attended school inGießen and graduated in 1943. He studiedlaw in Marburg and Munich from 1946–48.Vogel was
Mayor of Munich from 1960–72. After the general election in 1972 he became Federal Minister for Regional Planning, Construction and Urban Development. He served as Federal Minister of Justice from 1974–81. In the January he became governingMayor of West Berlin . However he lost the election in June andRichard von Weizsäcker became governing mayor. He ran for chancellor in 1983, but he lost the election. He was the chairman of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group from 1983–91. He succeededWilly Brandt as the leader of the SPD in 1987. In 1991 he resigned from his post as party leader.Vogel is the older brother of CDU politician Bernhard Vogel.
