- Barbara Remington
Barbara Remington is an American artist and illustrator, probably best known for her cover-art for
Ballantine Books ' first paperback edition ofJ. R. R. Tolkien 's novel "The Lord of the Rings".An interview with Remington about her association with "The Lord of the Rings" mentions that:
• Tolkien couldn't understand why there were pumpkins in a tree in her illustration, and why a lion appeared at all. (The lions were removed from the cover of later editions.)
• Remington had not been able to get hold of the books before making the illustration, and had only a sketchy idea from friends what they were about.
• She is now a huge Tolkien fan, and would have "have definitely drawn different pictures", had she read the books first. The Worm Ouroboros " byEric Rücker Eddison . She has also illustrated a number of children's books.Remington often signed her work "BRem" rather than using her full name.
