Idris Jones (born 1943) is a clergyman of the
Scottish Episcopal Church , in which he serves asBishop of Glasgow and Galloway and Primus of the whole church.Education and Ministry
He graduated from St David's University College,
Lampeter in 1964 with aBachelor of Arts , whereupon he read for hisLicentiate in Theology at theUniversity of Edinburgh , being ordaineddeacon in 1967. He was ordainedpriest in 1968 and served ascurate ofStafford Parish Church until 1970. From 1970 to 1973 he wasprecentor of St Paul's Cathedral inDundee . Following this, he became team vicar of St Hugh's inGosforth for seven years. In 1980 he becamerector ofMontrose . He was awarded hisdoctorate by theNew York Theological Seminary in 1984. In 1989 he becameAnglican chaplain to theUniversity of Dundee and Rector of Invergowrie. From 1992 to 1998 he was team rector ofAyr ,Maybole andGirvan until his election as Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. Dr Jones was elected as Primus by his fellow bishops
18 May 2006 , succeeding the retiringBruce Cameron . Following a tied election result his name was chosen as sole candidate by drawing of lots, whereupon he was unanimously elected Primus.
