Madagascar was adopted onOctober 14 ,1958 , two years before independence, as Madagascar prepared for a referendum on its status in theFrench Community .The colors of the flag represent Madagascar's history, yearning for independence, and traditional classes.
Red andwhite were the colors of theMerina kingdom, which succumbed toFrance in1896 . They were used in the flag of the last Merina monarch, QueenRanavalona III . They may indicate the ethnic origins of theMalagasy people inSoutheast Asia , and are shared by the flag ofIndonesia .Green was the color of theHova , the prominent class of peasant commoners, that played an important role in anti-French agitation and the independence movement.
