Richard Lawrence Garwin (born
April 19 ,1928 inCleveland, Ohio [cite news |author=William J. He received hisbachelor's degree fromCase Western Reserve University in 1947 and obtained his PhD from theUniversity of Chicago in 1949 (where he worked in the lab ofEnrico Fermi ). Garwin isIBM Fellow Emeritus at theThomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. Garwin received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest honor for the fields of science and engineering, in 2003. Richard Garwin is author of the actual design used in the first hydrogen bomb (code-named Mike).
